The Future that Changes the Past

Parashat Beshalach
This Shabbat when we read Parashat Beshalach is also termed “Shabbat Shira” for “Shirat Hayam” (The Song of the Sea) which we festively read on Shabbat morning in the synagogue. When and why was Shirat Hayam said? Six days after Am Yisrael was liberated from Egypt, it reached a dead end. The desert and the sea enclosed it from three different directions and behind it – the powerful Egyptian army was approaching to return it to slavery and oppression in Egypt. It seemed that all the events of the past year – the ten plagues and the wondrous Exodus from Egypt – were for naught. It seemed that the promises Moshe made in the Name of God were not going to be fulfilled. Desperation took hold and the nation reached an abyss that could only be grasped by someone who tasted freedom only to understand that it was out of reach.

Then the greatest miracle of all happened: The sea split into two and the nation walked across it. The Egyptian army saw nature collapse before its very eyes, the sea split and the Jewish nation crossed between its halves, but the Egyptians could not admit defeat. They also entered the sea and hoped to cross it and capture the Jewish nation escaping to freedom. But God Who could split the sea, also knew when to release the huge walls of water onto the heads of the Egyptians. The walls collapsed and they drowned in the sea along with their elaborate chariots of war.

When the liberated slaves saw the bodies of their former Egyptians slave-masters washed up on the shore; when they realized that the freedom they tasted was not imaginary but was real; when they saw God’s supervision and protection with their own eyes – they burst into song. This is Shirat Hayam whose description begins with the following words: “Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to the Lord, and they spoke saying…” (Shmot 15, 1) (Exodus 15:1)

A simple reading of this verse reads the word “az” as “then” – the description of a specific time. Then, after the “splitting of the sea”, this song was sung. But the sages of the midrash, in their profound way, add additional meaning to the seemingly simple word “then”: “Moshe said to the Blessed Be He: I know that I sinned before You with “Then”, as in ‘Since then when I came before Pharaoh to speak in Your Name, things got worse for this nation, and You did not save them’, and you drowned him (Pharaoh) in the sea, and therefore I praise You with ‘then’.” (Shmot Raba 23, 3)

The sages of the midrash surveyed the use of the world “then” in Moshe’s speech, and discovered that the previous time he used it; it was with a completely different tone. It was after Moshe was sent by God to warn Pharaoh, king of Egypt, that he must liberate the Jewish nation from the yoke of slavery, but Pharaoh did not only not heed the warning. He made the burden harder and took away the enslaved nation’s most basic necessities.  Moshe could not handle this failure and complained to God. Following the “Splitting of the Sea”, our sages tell us, Moshe remembered his complaint. Now he understood that his vision had been limited and his complaint unjustified.  Now he internalized that the process that took place was not coincidental, but was planned, and that is was Pharaoh’s imperviousness, wickedness, and pride that led him to this same overwhelming defeat at the Splitting of the Sea. This is what Moshe emphasizes at the start of Shirat Hayam.

Already in the very first word of Shirat Hayam, we discover an amazing secret.  We see the present, remember some of the past, but we have no knowledge of the future. Undoubtedly, there are many instances in which we would see the present differently if we only know how the future would unfold further down the road.

However, there is no need to wait for the future in order to better understand the present. A life of humility and faith leads us to seeing the present in a different light, even when it seems less than positive. Who knows what good might result from the hardship we are experiencing? Who knows what light we might discover from within the darkness? Humility is necessary for us to admit we do not know everything; faith is necessary so that humility does not lead us to exaggerated apprehension but rather to enlightening optimism. True, we do not know everything. But there is someone Who does and we know we can TRUST in HIM.

Let your Love shine–let it flow out of your heart for Israel!

We stand on the threshold of the end of days, as we know them.  In a time, the importance of standing with Israel and the Jewish people is unmistakably real.  Not too long ago before Israel became a nation in 1948, the Jewish people lived among the nations scattered by God as part of His ultimate plan for man.  In our lifetime, we have witnessed the preservation of the Jewish people from annihilation and witnessed their return to the land of Israel.

For centuries, we have read in the Bible of the Jews return to the Land of Israel. Yet we are the ones privileged to be alive to witness this miracle. “Hear the word of the Lord, O nations, and declare it in the isles afar off, and say, He who scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him as a shepherd does his flock.  For the Lord has redeemed Jacob, and ransomed him from the hand of one stronger than he. Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, Streaming to the goodness of the Lord—for wheat and new wine and oil, for the young of the flock and the herd; their souls shall be like a well-watered garden, and they shall sorrow no more at all.”  (Jeremiah 31:10-12)

We have witnessed nations argue among themselves as to the right of the Jews to live in their land.  We have watch threats and attacks from theirs neighbors and the rise of anti-semitism throughout the world–yet they stand. It has now been sixty-seven (67) years that Israel has been self-governed and able to protect the Jewish people themselves.  Many enemies threaten to drive Israel into the sea but God’s promise to the Jewish people rings loud and clear now and throughout eternity.  His promise is that never again would Israel be up-rooted from the land of Israel. “I will I will plant them in their land, and no longer shall they be pulled up from the land I have given them,” Says the Lord your God.” (Amos 9:15).

In these end of days, Christians and Jews alike watch for the Messiah. Christian watch for His return and the Jewish people watch for His arrival. The key point is that those of us, who believe, believe the Messiah is coming!  When He comes on that day, His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives physically returning to the land of Israel and to the people of His birth. It shall happen in that day; the Lord shall be King over all the earth: In that day it shall be—“The Lord is one,” and His Name one. Today we passionately watch and faithfully pray standing side-by-side with our Jewish brothers and sisters; the people God chose to bring His Word to the world.

We live in the days that this scripture is being fulfilled before our eyes, “Many nations shall come and say, ‘Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, and we shall walk in His paths.’ For out of Zion the law shall go forth, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.” (Micah 4:2)

We have a heart for Israel and the Jewish people because we have a heart for God.  Our Heavenly Father’s Love endures forever and though we His people may be faithless, He remains Faithful—for He cannot deny Himself.  “Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds.” (Psalm 36:5)

Israel–God’s Eternal Evergreen…

Merry Christmas Lovers of Israel,

Long before the dawn of Christianity, plants and trees that remained green all year had a special meaning for people during the dark days of the winter solstice.  Did you know that Germany started the Christmas tree tradition which we know today during the 16th century?  By the 19th century, Christmas trees stood in one out of every five homes and today there are millions of Christmas trees decorated throughout the world in celebration of Christ’s birth.

Did you know that the olive tree is an evergreen tree that has been cultivated for over 8000 years?  The olive oil that comes from the fruit of the olive tree yields itself under extreme pressure.  Huge millstones extract, through the process of pressure, the olive oil that contains many benefits as it presses the olive berries.  The first press produces extra virgin olive oil–sanctified it becomes anointing oil; the second press produces oil used for medicine; and, the third and final press produces oil used for soap.

Over thousands of years, the olive oil from these evergreen trees has provided fuel to light lamps.  In scripture, we find where the people of Israel were commanded to bring pure oil of beaten (pounded) olives (not pressed olives) for the lamp in the tabernacle and they were told to keep it burning continually from evening until morning before the Lord and this was to be a permanent regulation through all generations of the people of Israel.  (Exodus 27:20-21)

We find the olive tree throughout scripture to be a description of both Israel the people and Israel the land.  This symbolism draws the covenant connection between the land and the people of Israel.

In Deuteronomy 6, the Lord promises to give the land He swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to His people.  The place where olive trees grow that Israel did not plant.

In Jeremiah 11, the Lord calls Israel, His people, by the name ‘Green Olive Tree,’ which is lovely, full of leaves and good fruit, and a people that He planted in their promised land.

In Zechariah 4, the prophet sees a vision of a golden Menorah and two olive trees standing on either side.  The Lord reveals to the prophet that the two olive branches discharging oil through the two gold spouts are two men who have been anointed with oil; they are standing with the Lord of all the land.

In Hosea 14, the Lord says that He will heal His people’s backsliding, will love His people freely and will be like the dew to them and their beauty shall be like an olive tree.

In Amos 9, the Lord promises restoration to Israel, His natural olive tree, He promises to plant them in their land, and no longer will they be pulled up from the land He has given them.

In Romans 11, Paul’s revelation reveals the cultivated olive tree is God’s own olive tree and declares God’s ability to graft wild branches into His olive tree so they too can become partakers of the root and the fatness of the olive tree.  God will graft wild branches-in and will graft natural broken branches back into His original olive tree.  Paul warns the branches not to boast, but they are to remember the branches do not support the root, but the root supports the branches.

Jesus pressed into the perfect will of the Father through prayer in the olive grove of Gethsemane (in Hebrew ‘Gat Shemanim’ means ‘a press of oils’ aka ‘oil press’).  Hidden in these divine events we can draw a perfect image of the olive tree in God’s Plans.  Just like the pressing of olive berries produces anointing oil, medicine and soap; Jesus was pressed and the Fruit of His Body produced God’s Anointing, God’s healing–resurrection power and God’s cleansing power that removes sin.  He was pure yet He was beaten (pounded) confirming His Words, ‘I am the Light of the World.’  The olive tree is a natural reminder that speaks of the Truth that all that is GOOD comes through the process of pressing.  (Philippians 3:12)

As winter settles in, let us remember God’s eternal evergreen–Israel God’s olive tree nurtured by His Loving-Kindness and Faithfulness for thousands upon thousands of years.  Israel and the Jewish people chosen by God to be His ‘witnesses’ and ‘servant’ to know, to believe and to understand that He alone is God and there is none after Him.  (Isaiah 43:10)

Christmas trees only stand for a short season but the eternal evergreen of God stands growing year-after-year. This Christmas plant an olive tree in remembrance of God’s eternal Love and Faithfulness to His Word and to His people.  When you plant your olive tree in the Holy Land of Israel, you become a part of God’s sustaining force of Love that continually lifts Israel, ‘the Apple of His Eye.’  Let your seed be a supernatural connection that draws-out and lifts-up your deep love toward Israel and the Jewish people.  Our prayer is, ‘may God’s eternal olive tree prosper and grow where the Father has planted it and that He blesses those that bless Israel.’  (Genesis 12:3)

Blessings to you, your family and friends this Christmas, may each one be like a green olive tree in the house of God, trusting in the Mercies of God forever and ever.  (Psalms 52:8)

Israel’s “Faces” of Tragedy…

Dear Lovers of Israel,

I am writing to you from Brazil where I am negotiating with local Evangelical leaders and churches to expand our young ministry of to this beautiful country.  There are tens of millions of Lovers of Israel here in Brazil where they are waiting to-be-called to stand with Israel and eager to DO SOMETHING for Israel.  I am happy to share with you that I have found so much LOVE for Israel in the people’s hearts and above all, they hold a great desire to obey God, to bless Israel and to stand with Israel.

Israel’s “Faces” of Tragedy…

A few hours ago I was advised that the bodies of the three Israeli boys had been found near the City of Hebron in the West Bank.  We know they were murdered two weeks ago, right after their kidnapping, and the Israeli army continues even now to look for the two known Hamas members who committed this senseless, cruel crime.

This horrific news brings to light a great lesson for us all and I hope you would agree.  The lesson is Israel stands alone in the world arena “only having herself to truly protect her people and her borders.”  The world has made it clear that it does not care about Israel’s suffering at the hands of terrorists nor their daily defense against unprovoked attacks.  The world’s declarations and many of their decisions are not in Israel’s best interest, yet they are all said and done in the name of peace.

Only a few weeks ago, both the United States and the European Union announced that they would work and cooperate with the new government of the Palestinian Authority, which brought Hamas to the table as their partner.  The Palestinian Authority created a coalition that undermines peace and daily seeks to weaken Israel in the global arena as it continually turns the tables by blaming Israel for peace talk failures.  Then a few days later, Hamas members murdered three young Jewish boys in cold blood on their way home from school.  The United States approved Hamas as a legitimate partner in the New Palestinian Government, which is a clear reversal of its former designation of Hamas as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.  This so-called partnership holds no weight because Hamas cannot be a sincere partner in peace when continually calling for the death of Israel and its people; this makes no sense.

Certainly, the latest developments with Hamas and the current geo-political changes in the Middle East have the free world leaders faced with unimaginable threats.  The extreme Muslim terror organization ISIS is today moving towards Baghdad, killing innocent people in their path and flaunting their deaths across the media.  Their aim is to reach Jordan, then Israel and then move against Turkey.  The ultimate vision is to have a fully Muslim Middle East and eventually a Muslim Europe.  This is the world we are living in today, dear Lovers of Israel.  Fortunately, we are not without hope.  “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11)

I have called on you before and am calling on you again to stand with Israel as you have never stood before.  Make plans to come and visit the Holy Land, make a point to stay informed on what is happening in Israel by watching Israel Now News and be a part of the opportunities brings you to bless Israel.  Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.”  (1 John 3:18)

My desire is that you become a natural part of and together we will create a new Christian Diaspora for all Christian Lovers of Israel. those who truly care about the land and the future of the Jewish nation.  Moreover, for your heart to be filled with love for Israel all day long and for you to become ACTIVE in supporting Israel and in blessing her.  Pray for Israel, educate yourself about Israel, fly the Israeli flag in your home and at your church, teach your children about Israel and what the Bible has to say about God’s covenant and His promise to all who bless Israel.  God’s promise to all who bless Israel is a divine mystery hidden in His Word.  “I will bless those who bless you, but I will curse anyone who curses you; and by you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”  (Genesis 12:3)

The strongest way to make a difference for Israel in this world where hatred for Israel and the Jewish people is celebrated is for Lovers of Israel together to stand side-by-side, heart-to-heart, and support Israel.  We can overcome the darkness of evil together, both Jews and Christians, by standing up and saying “Enough is Enough, No More.”  We will not tolerate isolating Israel, accusing her as the aggressor, nor will we tolerate delegitimizing the Jewish people’s divine right to live in their ancient homeland.  We will boldly stand against anti-Semitic proclamations made against Israel.  As a Lover of Israel, we “stand-up” and we “stand behind” Israel, according to God’s Word, according to His promises.  This is how we show our world that we Love Israel.  Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”  (John 13:35)

I bless you with the Jewish Blessing of “KOL TUV!”  I pray only the best for you and yours as God guides your footsteps by His Holy Word.

Shalom, Shalom

Message from the Founder In Light of Current Events

Dear Lovers of Israel,

I am writing to you from Jerusalem as the world witnesses the recent movements of Salafi extremists in these pressing times. In light of these current events, it was in my heart to write to you today.

The latest updates which are coming from Iraq are about the collapse of the Iraqi government which was backed by the United States and the clever achievements of Al Qaeda.  Salafi Muslim forces are now moving forward towards Bagdad in efforts to fulfill their vision of one great Muslim extremist country which would stretch from Syria to Iraq.  We, in the free world, are now facing a great risk of extreme Salafi Islam which is even more ruthless than Al Qaeda.  This movement envisions the creation of one Muslim state with its established borders to include Lebanon, Jordan, Syria and Iraq bringing them under Sharee’ah law. These Islamic extremists also know and count-on having direct borders with Israel which would help them to achieve acts of terrorism and death targeting our homes and cities.  Yet, the free world remains silent.

These developments are very critical and are even more critical to all logical human beings around the world; please allow me to share with you two aspects of the latest events. The obvious two aspects are tied together: the Israeli aspect and the Obama aspect.  It is very clear; the Obama Administration’s weakness has brought today’s current political developments to the Middle East.  Furthermore, sadly there are some Americans that actually think that the Arab spring is an inevitable force that will come to Israel.  Can you believe this?  As for the Obama Administration, it saddens me to say, it is lacking in understanding and demonstrates weakness to these extremists.  As we watch Iraq struggle against falling into the hands of the Salafi Muslims, we know these traumatic events are a direct outcome of the many mistakes the Obama Administration has made in the Middle East over the last six years.

The other aspect is that the State of Israel is facing a dramatic change in the level and type of risks that would surround her in light of this huge escalation in both the political and military conditions globally. The combination of a nuclear Iran and Al Qaida Forces knocking on Israel’s borders from the South, East and North, if not prohibited, could become something that Israel has never faced before and could very well bring results that the world has never seen before.  It is clear that the first step of action for all Lovers of Israel is to “know and understand” the truth and the elements involved.

Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. (Proverbs 4:7)

My request for you today is to “keep praying” for Israel, but also to make every effort to know the specific details of what is happening in the Middle East so that when you pray for the Obama  Administration’s ability to demonstrate Godly wisdom and strength it will be based on the truth and knowledge found within Holy scripture.  When anyone moves forward to Bless Israel and support her it should always be done in light of God’s Holy Word.  The prayer of a righteous man or woman brings great power against any form of darkness that would attempt to bring new risks to Israel and to the innocent of the Middle East.

Therefore, today I call upon each and every one of you to become a watchman on the walls of Jerusalem.

“I have posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You, who call on the LORD, give yourselves no rest.” (Isaiah 62:6)

Israel cannot face all of these challenges of darkness and death without your strong prayers and loving support.  “Stay Tuned”, get “wisdom” and gain “full-knowledge” about radical Islam which now moves toward the gates of Jerusalem, but it also moves forward quickly throughout Europe, the United States and the rest of the free world.  It is not too late to stop the number one threat to human society today, especially when God’s ability and authority are in your hands.

“Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.” (Proverbs 3:27)

Today and every day, get knowledge, get wisdom and most importantly get understanding as you stand in strong loving support as defenders of Israel, His watchmen on the walls.  Ask our Heavenly Father what you can do to support Israel today and then simply obey.

God Bless you from Jerusalem.
Shalom! Shalom!

Love Israel Message from the Founder: June 2014

My Dear Lovers of Israel,

I am writing to you who Love Israel from Jerusalem, the Eternal Capital of the Jewish people that will never be separated from the Jewish people or divided again.

The Jewish People will celebrate the Feast of Weeks (Shavuot in Hebrew); the Feast of Shavuot commemorates the anniversary of the day when God gave the Torah to the entire Nation of Israel that gathered at Mount Sinai.  The miracles that happened to the Jewish nation are wonderful.  The People of Israel were freed from slavery to Pharaoh the King of Egypt on Passover and were given the Torah on Shavuot and when we became a nation committed to serving God.  The greatest miracle is that this holiday is being celebrated only a few weeks after the 66th Independence Day of Israel.  Today, the Jewish People are now back home in their eternal homeland after 2,000 years of exile!

“I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.” Our feet are standing in your gates, Jerusalem. Jerusalem is built like a city that is closely compacted together. That is where the tribes go up—the tribes of the Lord—to praise the name of the Lord according to the statute given to Israel.  There stand the thrones for judgment, the thrones of the house of David.  Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May those who love you be secure. May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels.” For the sake of my family and friends, I will say, “Peace be within you.” For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek your prosperity.” Psalm 122

In addition to the significance as the day the Word of God was revealed to the Jewish Nation at Mount Sinai, Shavuot is also connected to the season of the grain harvest in Israel.  The Feast of Firstfruits were first instituted while Israel was still wandering without land or crops and was observed in Faith that God would lead His people to the land He had promised.  The harvest which began at Passover lasts for 7 weeks and concludes on Shavuot with 2 bread loafs from the Harvest and is offered at the Temple in Jerusalem (Deuteronomy 26:1-11). Shavuot is also the First day on which an individual can bring their Firstfruit offering (Bikkurim in Hebrew) to the Temple and present it to the Priest (Cohen in Hebrew).

“Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.” (Proverbs 3:9-10)

For those of you who LOVE Israel and stand with her, I call upon you to make a pledge, your individual Gift of LOVE—your Bikkurim—a Firstfruit offering toward Israel that would express your First Gift of Love towards Israel.  Your Firstfuits offering Your “Gift of Love” demonstrates your Love as you plant Hope and Blessings in Israel which would bring Blessings 10 fold or more to you. It does not matter what you do for Israel, just DO SOMETHING, and you will be blessed above and beyond!  You can plant an olive tree, you can support Holocaust survivors or sick children or you can join any other program or organization that offers beautiful and meaningful projects.  You just need to listen to your heart and DO SOMETHING so you can say I stand with Israel and Bless her.

“On the First day of every week, each of you should take some of your money and put it in a special place. Save up as much as you can from what you are blessed with. Then you will not have to gather it all after I come.” (1 Corinthians 16:2)

On this Feast of Shavuot, it is my pleasure to share with you that children are playing in the streets of Jerusalem exactly as the Bible prophesied.  The people of Israel are growing larger and stronger with each passing minute, each and every day.  Israel will prevail against all threats and the bad winds that are blowing in our region.  God is with the Jewish People and you the Lovers of Israel are with the Jewish People and therefore God is forever with you.

“This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Once again old men and women will walk Jerusalem’s streets with their canes and will sit together in the city squares.  And the streets of the city will be filled with boys and girls at play.” (Zechariah 8:4-5)

I bless you with the traditional beautiful Jewish prayer to shine upon you and yours: “The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His Face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His Countenance upon you, and give you Peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26)

Blessings from Jerusalem!
Shalom, Shalom
