The First Tunnel Battle: Operation “Closed Circle”
In October 2024, the IDF carried out a daring mission to destroy Hezbollah’s largest underground base near Israel’s northern border. The base, built over a decade, was designed to house 200 operatives from Hezbollah’s elite Radwan unit and serve as a launch point for attacks on Israeli communities like Kiryat Shmona.
The Operation:
Named Operation “Closed Circle”, the mission lasted 36 hours and involved intense combat deep within the tunnels. Soldiers faced countless dangers, including fortified steel doors, booby traps, and cameras rigged to trigger explosions. The operation ended with a massive explosion using 400 tons of explosives, which completely destroyed the underground facility. The blast was so powerful it even triggered Israel’s earthquake alert system, momentarily alarming nearby residents.
Facing Challenges:
The soldiers demonstrated incredible courage and skill as they navigated the treacherous underground network. One key moment involved neutralizing a camera connected to a large explosive device, preventing a potential disaster for the team.
Looking Ahead:
This operation highlights the ongoing threats posed by Hezbollah and raises important questions about how such a sophisticated network was built so close to Israel. Despite these challenges, the IDF’s decisive actions once again showcased their unwavering commitment to protecting Israeli citizens.
