Finding Faith and Purpose in the Heart of Israel

Growing up in Miami, I was always surrounded by a vibrant mix of cultures, but faith was never something I really connected with on a personal level. It was just there—part of the background noise of life, not something central to who I was. Honestly, I didn’t think much about my heritage or spirituality until I visited Israel. That trip turned out to be a turning point for me.
The moment I stood in front of the Western Wall in Jerusalem, I felt something shift inside me. It’s hard to describe—it was like the weight of centuries suddenly pressed on me, but not in a heavy way. It was humbling, grounding. For the first time, I felt connected to something much larger than myself. It wasn’t just a wall of stone; it was alive, filled with the prayers, hopes, and struggles of countless generations. As I placed my hand on the ancient stones, I could feel the stories of my ancestors echoing through time.
But the trip wasn’t just about ancient history. I met people who embodied resilience and hope in ways that left me in awe. In Tel Aviv, I spent time with locals who were working to rebuild their communities despite facing incredible challenges. Their determination and sense of purpose were contagious. I realized that I had been living in my own little bubble back home, detached from the deeper struggles and triumphs of humanity.
When I returned to Miami, I couldn’t shake what I had experienced. It wasn’t enough to have felt inspired—I needed to act on it. That’s when I started volunteering with organizations supporting refugees in my area. It was my way of channeling what I had learned in Israel into tangible action. I wanted to build a sense of community for others, just as I had seen there.
Israel taught me that life is about more than just getting by—it’s about standing for something, about being part of a story that’s bigger than yourself. Looking back, I realize how much I needed that trip, even if I didn’t know it at the time. It wasn’t just a vacation; it was the beginning of a new chapter in my life, one filled with purpose, connection, and faith.
